How to Reach Satopanth Tal
Satopanth Tal is located near the holy town of Badrinath, which serves as the base for the trek. Here’s how you can reach Badrinath:
By Air: The nearest airport is at Jolly Grant at Dehradun which is about 310 kilometers from Badrinath. There are two ways of going to Badrinath from the airport, by hiring a taxi or by taking a bus service.
By Rail: The railhead is Rishikesh which is almost 292 kilometers from Badrinath. Rishikesh communication is very good with other cities in India, either by road, railways or in Airlines. There are buses and taxis available for Badrinath from Rishikesh.
By Road: The place can be reached by cars through the network of roads which connect the location. Public transport available from places like Haridwar, Rishikesh & Dehradun to Badrinath are frequent buses. There are also private taxis for anyone who wants to make the journey a little more comfortable.
From Badrinath the trek starts with a trail that goes by Mana Village which is the last human settlement before Indo- Tibetan border.
Best Time to Do Satopanth Tal Trek
The Satopanth Tal Trek is best done in the summer and post monsoon months; which are from May to June and September to October. These periods offer:
Pleasant Weather: During the day the temperature can hover anywhere between 5 Celsius and 15 Celsius, which makes it good for trekking.
Clear Skies: Two post monsoon months yield clear weather so that the big mountains are clearly visible.
Flora and Fauna: See the beautiful flowers of Trans-Himalayan region and stay tuned at the wildlife of the Himalayan region.
Do not plan the tour during monsoon period because most of the treks like Kudremukh, Chembra and others are dangerous by this times also there will be too much of slippery curves and slopes. Likewise, winter months, November to April cannot be recommended as the territory is always covered with snow, and the trails are inaccessible.
Difficulty Level of Satopanth Tal Trek
The Satopanth Tal Trek attracts tourists who are willing to undertake moderate to difficult trek and thus a strong physical and mental health condition is requisite. Here’s why:
High Altitude: It attains an altitude of about 4600m (15000 feet) on the high altitude of Tibet. A major problem is altitude sickness.
Rugged Terrain: This trail involves steep hills; rough routes; and glaciers that the hiker or tourist is supposed to cross.
Long Distances: A day’s journey is between 8-12 km; the physical terrain is not easy.
Weather Extremes: Fluctuation in the weather increases the difficulty of the trekking because changes in weather can be very abrupt.
Day1 : Arrive at Badrinath
Stay up that night and then get ready for the long walk in the morning.
Day2 : Badrinath to Lakshmi Van
The whole trek should be started early in the morning from Badrinath. The distance that has been estimated to be traversed during the trek is in kilometers is 9 km. Lakshmi van camp site is at a distance of 3 kms of moraine walk on the left bank of Alaknanda river.
Day3 : Lakshmi van to Chakrateertha
As a precaution, ensure you a healthy breakfast before the trek and take some fruits in between the trek. Always drink water all day as so often as possible. When you get to the campsite, make sure you wear a jacket and cover your head so you do not get too exposed to the cold. Summer here is hot with a maximum of 5 to 10 degrees for daytime while winter is as low as -5 to 0 degrees by night time.
Day4 : Chakrateertha to Satopanth Tal
Wake up early in the morning. To the left one is Mt. Neelkanth, right in front is Chaukanmba and to your right begin the Balakun range and you are not going to forget this view anytime soon. With this view in mind, lay yourself for a tough day of the trek. The very first path from chakrateertha is slightly easy and you are walking on the grasslands. For the patient and intrigued viewer there is an incredible sight to be seen from here. The Mount Chaukhamba has to be identified at the centre of the map, Balakun appearing to the right, Swargarohini to the left and Neelkanth at the extreme left, behind you. This has ensure that water quality within the lake is good. It is clean all round the year because we clean it as often as we can depending on the directory of the place. There are folktales and legends like there are few birds that constantly help in cleaning the lake. Yet no one has seen these birds up to this moment. You might be that lucky person who gets to spot on the trek!” You want to spend half an hour of peace walking around the lake. This is the right time and place to sit back and think about a long journey you have just undergone through. For Chakrateertha starts packing lunch or some snacks after that; start the journey in reverse. It will be possible to take approximately 2 to 3 hours before we get to the camp site.
Day5 : Chakrateertha to Mana and Drive to Badrinath
The same path that is followed when going to Chakrateertha from the Lakshmi van and again from mana to the Lakshmi van. This will roughly take approximately 5-6 hours to get to Mana village.
